Sleep Prosthodontics/Obstructive Airway Treatment
If you’ve tried CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) and it’s too uncomfortable to wear while sleeping, oral appliances can be the solution for you. Custom-made for each individual patient, these devices adjust your mouth into an optimal position for breathing while asleep.
In some cases, our patients find oral appliances easier to use and more comfortable than a CPAP machine. The goal is to relieve snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnea.
Dental devices are designed to open your throat by bringing your jaw or tongue forward during sleep. When the jaw moves forward, it allows more room for the tongue and soft tissue. Dental devices slightly open the teeth to keep the soft tissue from closing the airway, thus allowing you to breathe easier.
What to Expect With a Dental Device?
Most dental devices fit inside your mouth much like an athletic mouth guard or night guard. We offer a full range of dental/oral appliances, including:
· Mandibular repositioning devices (MADs)
· Tongue retaining devices
Each dental device is custom-made for the individual. We conduct an exam to develop a unique profile for each patient, ensuring a comfortable fit.
It is extremely important to have your exam and fitting done by a dental practitioner specializing in sleep apnea. You may need to have your dentist adjust the mouthpiece to fit better as your muscles relax or strengthen over time.
